Ultrasound is a common therapeutic modality used in most physiotherapy practices. Ultrasound emits sound waves from a handheld device which can penetrate 1-2 inches deep into the soft tissues of the body. These sound waves increase heat, improve circulation in the area while also relaxing muscles and promoting tissue healing. While you are receiving this treatment, you will most likely not feel anything, except perhaps a slight warming sensation or tingling around the area being treated. The main benefits of this treatment are decreasing pain, increasing flexibility and extensibility of muscles and tendons, improving range of movement, and increasing mobility. This type of treatment can be used for any soft tissue injury such as bursitis, tendonitis, muscle strains and tears, frozen shoulder, sprains and ligament injuries, joint contractures or tightness.
