Kinesio taping is a therapeutic modality used in physiotherapy and other medical professions to improve one’s functional performance by improving mobility and supporting joints, muscles, and tendons. This tool is used in pain management, soft tissue injury, tissues and joints malalignment, oedema and more. The theory behind this is that kinesio tape is a mechanical stimulus for various systems in the body such as the central nervous system, the skin, fascia and the lymphatic and circulatory system. This mechanical stimulus modulates pain responses, improves lymphatic flow which results in swelling reduction and increases blood flow to the area. Kinesio taping has different types of applications to tailor around the problem area and target the specific soft tissue involved using different strengths and stretches of tape. The main advantage of this modality is that it is applicable to multiple patient populations and can be applied at any stage of rehabilitation.
